London has precious few of these: A classic, truly cheap British B&B guest house of tiny but comfortable rooms (16 of them) where guests share bathrooms and Latvian brews in an lovely old home.

(OK, so the Latvian thing is a bit unique; guests can partake of Latvian beers and Riga Balzam—herb-infused vodka—in Balzāmbārs, the basement's private club bar Fridays and Saturdays—and Latvian meals if you reserve ahead.)

Room sizes range from singles to family rooms—though all are pretty cramped and basic, and the beds aren't the world's comfiest—but hey: that's easy to forgive when the rates are as low as £85 per night for a double room.

The staff is friendly, WiFi free, hot breakfast delicious, flower-filled courtyard lovely, shared bathrooms kept spotless (bedrooms have only sinks), and Tube stations are very close by.

The walls are thin, and there is some street noise from nearby Bayswater Road (including evening crowds on the weekends), but that is par for the course in a cheap B&B.
