JMW Turner
An amazing British painter whose work presages the Impressionists
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was a prolific and multi-talented Romantic artist who tried on many styles throughout his career.
In particular, the mood-laden, freely-brushed watercolor landscapes he often favored greatly influenced Monet and the coming Impressionist movement.
Turner's works grace many a British museum, including:
- National Gallery, London
- Tate Britain, London
- The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich
- Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool
- Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
- Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham
- Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham
- Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester
