This hotel overlooking the Avon River just a few blocks south of the cathedral has been a coaching inn since the thirteenth century.

My favorite rooms are in the 13th Century section, with their original oak beams.

You might prefer the spacious Garden Wing Executive Rooms, some of which on the ground floor open directly onto the riverside garden.

Regardless of your bedroom, you can enjoy the lovely lawn and river views from the modern dining room. Prices in the restaurant (and bar) are a bit steep, but the cooked breakfast/hot buffet is worth the splurge over the Continental breakfast (which also, sadly, is extra).

Service can be a bit hit-or-miss, and some staff member quite surly—which is odd, given the price range—but the straight-from-a-painting views are hard to beat, and you're just a few minutes' stroll from the Cathedral and town center.
